Day 8 of Hope
Not everyone has to agree on everything. We can't and we mustn't. What a terrible world it would be if we were all the same and thought the same way. We need to listen to each other, respect each other, and in spite of a disagreement recognize the value and dignity of each other. I often think of the friendship between Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia. They agreed on very little and argued bitterly, but they were also the best of friends. They did not let their disagreements stand in the way of their respect and admiration of each other. They called each other and spoke kind words, they dined together and shared their lives, and they bought each other meaningful gifts. They even started a tradition of celebrating New Year's with together with their spouses. Ruth is even quoted as saying, "I don't agree with most of what he says, but I love the way he says it". Scalia also said," She likes opera and she's a nice person, what's not to like except her view of the law". It was said by an interviewer, " I don't think they even try to influence each other, both of them simply have big personalities, love the arts, love to laugh, and are brilliant". Theirs was a beautiful friendship of disagreement and respect, of listening to each other, of sharing life, of just being real. They always saw the humanness of the other, the dignity, and most importantly the value. A beautiful thing, something to strive for, something to hope for.
